The Centenary is here - we’re having fun, we’re taking on challenges, we’re beginning the greatest adventure ever…

This weekend, Girlguiding Cambridgeshire East kicked off our Centenary year of celebrations in style with Launch 100 – a fantastic day of fun and activities for over 1700 of our members.  We joined over 550,000 girls and women in the UK’s biggest birthday bash of the year, the launch of Girlguiding UK’s Centenary celebrations. The Guideopoly event was one of hundreds that took place at the same time throughout the UK to mark the first 100 years of guiding – to find out what happened in the rest of the UK click here.

Cambridgeshire East – Launch 100

On Saturday morning, over 1700 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section members arrived on site for a giant picnic at the Moller Centre, Cambridge.  Rainbows then stayed on-site to enjoy activities such as parachute games, face painting and a Centenary duck treasure hunt.

Teams of Brownies, Guides and Senior Section were sent into Cambridge city centre to complete a Guideopoly Challenge.  They played a game of giant Monopoly with various checkpoints to fund around the centre and took part in balloon modelling, giant bubble making, parachute games, circus skills along the way.

In the evening, nearly 2000 members and supporters, including Ambassadors, local VIPs, Trefoil Guild members and girls returned to the Moller Centre for a BBQ, singalong and spectacular musical firework display to end the evening and begin our county Centenary celebrations with a bang!

Sue Carpenter, County Commissioner, said: Our Launch Party shows what guiding in Cambridgeshire East is all about. Everywhere, there were happy, smiling faces and the sound of laughter and excitement from the youngest Rainbow to our oldest member. It was a wonderful start to our 100th birthday celebrations, and really highlights the importance of the unique girl-only space we provide for thousands of girls in the county.

A whole-year of celebrations

Our Centenary celebrations run from now until the 20th October 2010 – a whole year packed full of fun, adventure and new experiences lies ahead.

The Centenary is an opportunity to celebrate the impact that the organisation has made on the lives of girls and young women and how modern guiding continues to support over half a million members around the UK to take on adventures, develop new skills and achieve their full potential in a unique, girl-only space.
