Here is what the team had to say about themselves:
Sarah Anderson
I am 18 years old and am currently at college. I am part of City
South East District. In this district I am a ranger at the 17th Cambridge
Rangers and I am also a Young Leader at 5th Cambridge Brownies and I am
currently working towards my leadership qualification. I enjoy being
in guiding because there are so many opportunities for you and it is very
rewarding.
Grace Bristow
I have been in Guiding since I was 10. I wasn't a Brownie – it clashed with swimming! I began in Warwickshire. Since 1971 have been Guider of a village Guide unit in Brinkley, near Newmarket and since 1990, Assistant Guider of Brinkley Rangers. I am a Trainer for Anglia Region and belong to an International Trainers' Workshop which has taken me to various parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico. I was a Deputy Head Teacher but retired from full time work three years ago. I still do consultancy work and supply teaching from time to time in my own school. My husband Tony and I both work as volunteers for Badminton England, running national junior tournaments all over the country. I have always enjoyed the challenges offered by Guiding and recently was proud to be asked to be Assistant County Commissioner. As you can imagine I fully endorse the STEPS view of 'staying in Guiding' and I am very much looking forward to working with everyone involved.
Emma Fletcher
I became involved in STEPS having sold the former HQ site at Perne Road. Having showed a little too much knowledge on Guiding, I was soon enlisted by Ann Mitchell to get more involved. A former brownie, guide and brownie young leader I am now one of the D of E Team and holds the gold D of E. I am married to Charlie and live in a cottage with very little heating in Swaffham Prior.
Clare Grout
I'm
19 and studying geography at Cambridge University. I've been in Guiding
since I was five, unless you count the Brownie pack holidays before
that with my Mum! Now I am CUSAGC Scout and Guide Liaison Officer as
well as a Brownie leader in Cambridge (and Epsom when I am at home). I
love all things Guiding and Scouting as well as kayaking, ballroom
dancing and playing table tennis.
Lizzie Hills
I run 17th Cambridge Rangers and completed my leadership training a couple of years ago. I am also a leader with the Girls Brigade. I joined the STEPS team when 17th Cambridge Rangers volunteered to edit Communic8, the county Senior Section newsletter.
Kate Langley
I have been in Guiding since I was 10. I was a Guide, Young Leader and then adult leader in Guildford. Then I came up to Cambridge for university and helped with Brownies during my degree. I'm now an Assistant Guider with 7th Cambridge Guides and District Commissioner for Cambridge City West. I've just been on my first trip abroad with Guiding, taking a group of Rangers to Poland. It was brilliant and I've definitely caught the travelling bug!
During the day I work in the pharmacy at Addenbrookes and in my spare time I like cycling, playing the French Horn, gardening and doing all sorts of craft.
Elaine Middleton
I've grown up with guiding as the daughter of a Brownie Guider. I gained my BP in 1995 and after a break, while I completed my degree, came back to Guiding as a guide guider. I have recently moved units and taken on the 3rd Wisbech Senior Section which, although I'm still finding my way, I am enjoying.
Sarah Middleton
I am a Guide/Senior Section guider and have been involved in
guiding since I was seven. I don’t actually run a unit at the moment as I took
a break to study for a diploma in marketing, but have kept involved as a
district guider. I have a passion for International guiding and have travelled
to Switzerland, Austria, Czech
Republic and twice to Japan through guiding. I’m married
to Paul and we have a daughter called Lara. My day job is as
Marketing Communications Manager for a seed company in Cambridge. Hobbies include music, walking and
swimming.
Corrina Nicholson
I became a Queens Guide in 1996 back in my home county of Avon South/Somerset North and am now an Assistant Guider with 1st Little Downham Guides and Ely Senior Section (Fen Tigers). I also find time to be the District Commissioner for Littleport as well as the Queens Guide Co-ordinator and enjoy leading international trips for Girlguiding UK. In my day to day life I co-ordinate the Local Network Fund, a grants programme for children and young people. My hobbies include being with my friends, going to the cinema, travelling and swimming as well as following my Guides advice of ‘Go for It!!’
Sarah Shailes
I am 20 years old and have been involved in guiding since I joined brownies at the age of 8. I am studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge University and when I am not studying I can often be found playing music, swimming and enjoying guiding and scouting activities. I am a Brownie leader in Cambridge and also the Scout and Guide Liaison Officer for my University Scout and Guide Club (CUSAGC).
Paula Syred
I live in March and am Division Commissioner for Fenland Division.
Jean Verney
I have been a Ranger Guider since 1989. I am a chartered
accountant and work as Finance Director for an American-owned company in
Letchworth Royston which manufactures and distributes hardware and software for
real-time displays e.g. radar. I have collected penguins (not the live variety)
for a long time, hence my e mail address!
Sarah Vowler
I have been involved with Guiding since I became a Brownie when I was seven. In that time I have also been a Guide, a Young Leader and an Adult leader. I have been a Brownie leader with packs in Bath, Southampton and Cambridge and was also a Guide leader for a time in Cambridge. I am currently the County's Webmaster. In my spare time I am a computational biologist at Cancer Research UK.
Shirley Wardrop
I’ve been involved in Guiding for 21 years, mostly as a Brownie Guider in Cambs East, but I’ve also run a Guide Unit in Hertfordshire and now help with one in Bedfordshire. I was a Guide, (that was a century ago), and managed to gain my Queen’s Guide Award. I’m a Training Analyst and work for the MOD. In the time that remains I spend many hours on the hills of the north and elsewhere as a DoE expedition instructor for a secondary school in Baldock where all three of my daughters (all ex Brownies and Guides) went to school.
