3rd Cambridge Guides win Forward! |
|
Naomi Gardom reports on the Forward Incident Hike, organised by CUGAGC.
On a grey Sunday morning in February, 34 teams of Scouts and Guides set off on an 11 mile walk in the area around Bar Hill. We had to plan our route before we set off, which had to include all of the seven checkpoints. It was my first Forward, and when our leader drove off and our team was left staring blankly at the map and wondering where on earth we were supposed to go, I almost despaired of ever being able to finish. However, we rallied round and reached the first checkpoint in good time, stopping only to note down the item that Whispy, the CUSAGC mascot, had lost. The checkpoint activities throughout the day included a logic problem that we had to solve, using bearings to map out a star constellation and dealing with a first aid situation. The teams were marked on these before continuing to the next checkpoint. At the half-way checkpoint, we were given hot drinks and sat down to complete the activity and eat a well earned lunch. Despite getting lost before we reached the next checkpoint, tempers remained, on the whole, equable, and were soon found, along with some other teams who had made the same mistake. After that, the end seemed reasonably close and we finished the route without much further difficulty, arriving back to hot dogs and cake. It would have been a wonderful experience even if my team had not won out of the Guide teams. Thank you so much to Clare Grout and the CUSAGC for organising it all for us. |
