Hundreds of lucky girls and young women from Girlguiding Cambridgeshire East are celebrating after being awarded two major grants recently.
1st Newmarket Rangers have received a grant of £8,450 from the
Cambridgeshire Youth Bank. The money will be used to support girls
aged from 13-25 with a whole host of special and additional needs who
are members of Girlguiding in Cambridgeshire. Rachel Copping, a
Ranger, helped to write the grant application. She said: “Getting the
grant money was fantastic. We are so pleased for the girls with
special needs, we have lots of action packed events lined up for them
and the money will be put to very good use!!”
Surprise Yourself!, a bi-monthly guiding show on community-based
209radio has also been successful. The project has been awarded over
£1500 from SWITCH, a National Lottery funded initiative for Girlguiding
groups to take part in activities that are innovative and diverse.
Rosie Howell, a Brownie Leader from Barrington, has produced and
presented the show since October 2007, with help from a team of local
Guides. The team plan to spend their grant on resources, training and
more airtime to extend and promote the show.
Rosie Howell, leader with the 1st Barrington Guides, presenting ‘Surprise yourself!’ on 209radio
County Commissioner, Sue Carpenter, said “I am delighted that two of
our local projects have been successful. Both the applications were
made by our young members themselves, as part of Girlguiding UK’s
commitment to being a girl-led organisation. These young women were
able to display their passion for guiding and will now, together with
many other girls and young women, be able to take advantage of all that
it has to offer”.
