Baden Powell Award on the air

Jo Maimaris from 2nd Linton Guide Unit has achieved the highest badge for Guides – her Baden-Powell Challenge Award.

She received the award on air, whilst recording the Surprise Yourself show on 209radio on Saturday 5 January 2008 of which she is co-presenter. Sue Carpenter, County Commissioner, came into the studio to present the award. Jo was completely surprised as she did not know this was going to happen. The presentation was organised with the help of her unit Guider.

Jo is awarded her BP challenge award by county commissoner Sue

The Baden-Powell Challenge Award can be completed by any Girlguiding UK member aged 10–14 years. Girls have to complete a number of tasks and challenges, including:

  • Healthy Lifestyles – promoting physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
  • Global Awareness – increasing awareness of global issues.
  • Discovery – challenging Guides to participate in a new experience
  • Skills and Relationships – developing the girls’ self-confidence and self-worth.
  • Celebrating Diversity – increasing awareness of rights and responsibilities for all.

Jo included research into Fair-trade, held an Olympic evening for her unit and arranged a party for local Brownies along with other girls in her patrol. Her adventure was spent at Our Chalet in Switzerland in 2007. “This was the highlight. I made a lot of new friends from all over the world. It was fantastic” said Jo “It was a challenge but I choose things that I knew I would enjoy. I had a lot of fun.”Jo is a co-presenter on Surprise Yourself show on 209radio with her sister, Helen and Rosie Howell. You can listen in on www.209radio.co.uk where you will find the show in the archive section or it is broadcast on 105fm at 1pm on alternate Saturdays. The show includes interviews, activity ideas and news from Girlguiding Cambridgeshire East.
