July News from Girlguiding Cambridgeshire East In June 120 Brownies from across the County took part in Airport Day when they ‘flew’ to Kenya and Australia to experience the cultures of these two countries and gained two World badges during the day. On 4 July for over 80 Brownies and Guides from Shelford District met at Gog Magog Hills Farm for a sausage supper which was preceded by parachute games and a wide game. Lesley, who was Brown Owl at Stapleford in the 1990s, welcomed everyone to the farm and County Commissioner Ann presented Thanks Badges to leaders who had given a total of 18 years to guiding in the District: Marian (5 years) and Tracey (10 years) at 2nd Stapleford Brownies, and Gloria (3 years) at 2nd Shelford Brownies. She also presented Baden-Powell Challenge Awards to Susannah and Elaine from 1st Shelford Guides, reminiscing on their Challenge Adventure ‘Up in the Air’ when they climbed the tower of King’s College Chapel. Guides Alex, Elaine and Jane brought the evening to a close by leading everyone in some favourite campfire songs, while Young Leader Stephani kept the fire burning. Linton Brownies’ Fruit Machine was a great attraction at the Flower Festival. Four teams of three girls wearing pretty flowered hats took turns to attract punters young and old for a chance to win 20p of they drew three fruits, or a sweet for the losers. The girls raised £19.10 for the Flower Festival. Race For Life Sarah, County International Adviser and bride-to-be, chose to end her hen weekend by taking part in Race for Life with her bridesmaids. She raised a fantastic £600 (including Gift aid) - and as a team they came close to £1000. Sarah said, “We nearly bottled it at about midday, when we realised that we had to run in 34 degrees but your money spurred us on! We started together and finished in between 30 and 34 minutes - my time was a respectable 30m48s (well, respectable in the heat anyway!). There is no truth in the saying that ladies do not sweat, I can assure you!!!” Three generations of Guides at Beth’s first campfire! Mum is Dana, Snowy Owl, and Nanny is Pat, Brown Owl at Good Shepherd Brownies in Cambridge. Beth, also known as Snowflake, even has her own camp blanket. Nanny wasn't wearing hers as she had been cooking the sausages! Not bad at three and a half months? We'll make a Guide out of her yet – watch out world! |
